Faversham Town Council is progressing with the essential refurbishment of the historic Guildhall. Following the completion of a detailed condition survey and a full measured survey, the project is now moving into the next key stages of preparation. Mortar samples have been taken and submitted for analysis, with results expected shortly.
A draft Schedule of Works has been initiated, and a list of contractors has been compiled and issued for Council approval. Following expert consultation, it has been agreed that the repair of the Guildhall’s timber columns will be included within the project scope, enhancing the long-term preservation of this important heritage asset.
In addition, discussions with a paint historian have taken place to ensure that any future decoration is informed by the building’s historic character. Further access via cherry picker may be required to obtain additional paint samples for detailed analysis.
Next Steps – October 2025
Over the coming months, the project team will:
- Appoint the paint historian and incorporate their findings into the project documentation
- Receive and integrate the timber consultant’s schedule of works
- Review mortar analysis results and include recommendations in the specification
- Finalise the project specification for Council approval
- Issue tenders to contractors for pricing
- Prepare and submit the Listed Building Consent application
These steps mark significant progress in safeguarding the Guildhall for future generations while respecting its architectural and historical importance.
Works are expected to start in April 2026 and are being overseen by the Heritage, Building and Creek Committee
