Town Council’s statement on violence against women and girls

At a County Council meeting on the 10th of July, the reform councillors voted down a motion intended to push forward Kent County Council’s work to stop violence against women and girls. the Town Council is a White Ribbon Accredited organisation. The White Ribbon pledge promises too “never use, excuse or remain silent about men’s violence against women”.

During the debate, it was particularly concerning that some councillors, including the leader, used the motion to spread misinformation regarding the root causes of violence against women and girls. Given the authority of their positions, this behaviour is especially damaging. To truly tackle this epidemic issue, it’s vital that we understand the truth about these causes and take decisive steps to combat them. Ending violence against women and girls begins with all men. Every man has a role to play in challenging harmful attitudes and behaviours, and in fostering a culture of respect and equality.

Faversham Town Council will continue its strong support for the White Ribbon campaign. We will also actively collaborate with vital local organisations like SATEDA, Kent Police, and the Kent Police and Crime Commissioner to speak out against and eridicate all forms of violence against women and girls across Faversham.
