Faversham Town Council to Withdraw from X as an Official Communication Channel

Faversham Town Council has agreed to withdraw from X (formerly known as Twitter) as one of its official communication channels.

This decision follows growing concerns about changes to the platform’s governance, moderation, and overall standards. In particular, the Council is mindful of the increasing presence of misinformation, reduced content moderation, and the potential for harmful or misleading material to be amplified.

As a public body, the Council has a responsibility to communicate with residents in ways that are safe, inclusive, transparent, and aligned with its values. Remaining active on a platform where these standards cannot be assured risks undermining public trust and associating the Council with an environment it cannot control.

The Council is committed to ensuring that residents can access reliable information without needing to engage with platforms that may negatively impact civility or community cohesion.

Faversham Town Council will therefore cease posting new content on X and will provide a clear notice on the platform to inform users of this change.

Residents are encouraged to stay connected through the Council’s other communication channels, including its website, Facebook page, and email newsletters, which offer more accessible and moderated spaces for updates and engagement.

The Council will continue to keep its digital communications under review to ensure they remain effective, inclusive, and in line with best practice.
