Armed Forces Day 2026

On Sunday 14th June, Faversham Town Council proudly marked Armed Forces Day as part of its annual “Faversham in the 40s” event, a popular community celebration that commemorates the spirit, resilience and heritage of the wartime era.

The day began with a short but meaningful parade through the town centre, led by Army Cadets carrying the Armed Forces Day flag. They were joined by veterans and members of the local community, creating a fitting tribute to the men and women who have served, and continue to serve, in the United Kingdom’s Armed Forces.

The parade attracted spectators of all ages, who gathered to show their appreciation and support for serving personnel, reservists, veterans and military families. The Armed Forces Day commemoration formed an important part of the wider “Faversham in the 40s” programme, which celebrates the town’s wartime history through reenactments, displays, entertainment and educational activities.

The day was officially opened by the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Ben Martin, who welcomed attendees with a short speech, highlighting the importance of the occasion and recognising the contributions of those who had gathered to take part. His remarks set a positive and respectful tone for the event.

Following this, our Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Charles Gibson, addressed the audience. In his speech, he spoke about the significance of supporting the Armed Forces community, paying tribute to serving personnel, veterans, and their families, while emphasising the value of remembrance, recognition, and community engagement. His words were warmly received by those in attendance.

By incorporating Armed Forces Day into the event, Faversham Town Council provided an opportunity for residents and visitors alike to reflect on the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces, while recognising their ongoing contribution to national security and community life. The occasion served as both a respectful act of remembrance and a celebration of the enduring connection between the Armed Forces and the people of Faversham.

The Armed Forces Day flag was proudly flown from the historic Guildhall in the Market Place, creating a prominent focal point for the town’s celebrations and serving as a powerful symbol of respect and appreciation for the bravery, dedication and sacrifice of those who serve in the Armed Forces, past and present.

The Royal Air Forces Association played a prominent role throughout the day, raising both awareness and vital funds to support serving personnel, veterans, and their families. They were joined by the Royal British Legion and Army Cadets, whose stalls provided visitors with opportunities to learn more about their work, engage with volunteers and cadets, and contribute to the continued support of the Armed Forces community. Together, the organisations helped highlight the importance of remembrance, service, and ongoing welfare support while adding to the day’s strong sense of community spirit.

The day was another resounding success, with the people of Faversham turning out in great numbers to show their support for our Armed Forces while celebrating the town’s rich wartime heritage. Visitors of all ages enjoyed stepping back in time and experiencing what life in Faversham was like during the 1940s, with historical displays, reenactments, and community activities bringing the era vividly to life. The strong turnout and enthusiastic atmosphere reflected both the community’s appreciation for those who have served and its pride in preserving and sharing an important chapter of Faversham’s history.
