Imminent Sale of Newnham Woodland

Dear Newnham neighbour,

You may have noticed the auction sign placed at the Faversham Road end of the village.

This refers to the sale of the woodland behind the cricket pitch, which is currently at risk

of being potentially lost to development or unsustainable use. This 26-acre woodland

represents a rare and irreplaceable ecological asset, supporting biodiversity,

contributing to climate resilience, and providing significant social and educational value

to us – the local community. Many of us have been walking through this woodland for

decades.

A small group of us, known as Wild about Newnham, are exploring the idea of raising

funding to secure this land by forming a community consortium to retain the woodland

within village ownership and management, thus ensuring its protection for our children

and grandchildren.

We realise that this is an ambitious plan: it is currently on the market for £150,000 and is due to go to auction on 7th May.

We are seeking support from any villagers interested in helping with this bold plan. We

would welcome:

–       Donations to the GoFundMe account.  If the bid is unsuccessful, all monies

would be returned within 7 days.

–       Advice as to how to create a charity bank account into which we could receive

donations from a GoFundMe page.

–       Advice on how to set up a trust/community consortium to purchase, oversee

and maintain the woodland should we be successful in our bid

–       Support with fundraising to raise enough money for a bid.

–

–       Any other help you feel you could offer.
