Faversham Market Town of Kings Bids to Become UK Town of Culture 2028

Faversham has officially launched its bid to become the UK Town of Culture 2028, showcasing a powerful vision rooted in heritage, creativity, and community.

One of England’s oldest market towns, Faversham’s story is shaped by centuries of enterprise, from its medieval streets and Magna Carta links to its proud brewing and industrial past. Today, that legacy continues through a thriving cultural scene driven by artists, makers, musicians, and a year-round programme of festivals and events.

Despite its rich cultural offer, Faversham remains one of Kent’s best-kept secrets. The Town of Culture bid aims to change that—raising the town’s national profile while strengthening opportunities for residents to engage with culture in new and meaningful ways.

At the heart of the bid is a commitment to inclusion. Faversham faces real challenges, including pockets of deprivation, limited youth provision, and divisions between communities. This programme will bring culture beyond the town centre, reaching underserved areas and ensuring that everyone can take part.

Plans include a bold new Street Arts Festival, expanded community-led events, skills development opportunities for young people, and greater collaboration across the town’s many festivals and organisations. The programme will also celebrate Faversham’s identity as a welcoming Town of Sanctuary, using culture to build connection and understanding.

Led by Faversham Town Council and Creek Creative, the bid has already brought together a wide range of partners—from artists and community groups to schools and local businesses.

If successful, Faversham’s year as UK Town of Culture will leave a lasting legacy: stronger communities, increased cultural participation, and new opportunities for future generation
